being nessasary

a quirky look into being

I love reading books and websites discussing what it is t”be.”   I have always been drawn to the zen, finding peace kind of stuff.  It calms me, makes me feel a little less scattered about the planet.  However, I have lately been discouraged, or perhaps too vegetable soupy about “just being.”  I tend to over analyze, but do not want to be corrected – we are called human beings – this term is LOADED.  To put human before being is essentially negating the entire philosophy behind the two words.  We are never far from the cliche, “To err is human.”  When capitalized Being is synonymous with God – and God in a completely religious sense is always perfect.  Considering religion is etched on the walls on caves, I give the first right usage of  B/being to Being So, to a nerdy English and word fanatic like myself, I find it peculiar thatwe are called human beings.

I think it to just “be” is impossible.  We are all faulty and full.  We can be to many things at once.  For example:

Cher is feeling quite frazzled.  She is bedazzled in a sequins dress on stage in a Kentucky roadside bar.

She is so many things: frazzled, bedazzled, a woman in a sequins dress, on stage, in Kentucky, in a bar, she is Cher, she is alive…….

I could go on with all of her am, is, are, was, were, been, and beings.

So, that is what I am challenging myself and readers to do.  I want to write about my beings.  What it is to be me, someone else, something else and so on.  I hope to hear comments, reflections, and releases.

Happy Being!

“Each of us is a being in himself and a being in society, each of us needs to understand himself and understand others, take care of others and be taken care of himself.”    -Haniel Long

“We are so obsessed with doing that we have no time and no imagination left for being. As a result, men are valued not for what they are but for what they do or what they have-for their usefulness.”   -Thomas Merton.
